Frequently Asked Questions

What is Model UN

Model United Nations is a program in which high school students learn about the organization of the United Nations and debate global issues in order to try to write resolutions. Dulaney High School participates in the Burlington County, New Jersey YMCA Model United Nations program. Students will meet weekly to conduct research and prepare for a January conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania, where they will meet with other high school students from around the country in a mock United Nations committee.

How much does it cost?

Program fees include:

  • Hotel accommodations for two nights at Hershey Lodge
  • Meals
  • Conference materials (manuals, t-shirts, etc.)
  • Transportation to and from conference
  • Adult advisers (1 adult per 10 students required)

* Scholarships are available!

Is it a lot of work?

Yes! Model UN requires research and preparation. You will even have homework! Students will be also asked to become familiar with parliamentary procedure, which is a set of guidelines about how students should speak in committee. Is it worth it? Absolutely! Model UN is a great experience!

Why should I join?

Do you want to make the world a better place? In last year’s conference, students successfully passed resolutions that limited nuclear weapons use, brought peace to the Middle East, organized a trial for a well-known terrorist, and avoided the Cuban Missile Crisis! They also gained confidence, met new friends, and got to spend a fun weekend in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Model UN is a program that promotes leadership, public speaking, and diplomacy. It combines history, politics, culture, and current events and helps increase student awareness of global issues. It’s also FUN! Students who are interested in politics and global issues are strongly advised to come to the first informational meeting. The first meeting will be in September in Room 105.
